Matthew Sevareid - Director & Lead Teacher

Matthew Sevareid is the founder of Foundations Community Nursery School and has been an early childhood educator for over thirty years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development from Pacific Oaks College as well as a Director’s Certificate from LAVC. He is also the father of three children, ages twenty five, twenty three, and nine. 

From his teens on, Matthew has spent his professional life working with children. He has held numerous titles throughout his career including behavior specialist, resource specialist, early elementary school lead teacher, preschool teacher, tutor, physical education teacher,  and swim instructor.

Matthew’s work in preschools has helped him set the groundwork for understanding the emotional needs of young children. By focusing on communication, play and respect, he is able to create safe, inclusive environments that allow each child to become comfortable getting their needs met and taking appropriate risks.

His experiences in progressive and constructivist elementary schools taught him how children can become advocates in their own learning. He believes that allowing children the ability to explore their interests provides a richer and more meaningful school experience.

Switching periodically between preschool and elementary schools has given Matthew the chance to understand the full range of childhood and work through the development process of a child.

Additionally, Matthew is in the unique position of understanding the gamut of parenthood by raising teenagers as well as a preschooler. He knows how the demands of modern parenting are very different from past generations. He is eager to share what he knows to help parents weather the storm of raising children today.

His journey continues here with the creation of Foundations Community Nursery School. Seeing the need for a truly child-centered, emergent-based curriculum with a strong social and emotional component, Matthew has created this special home-based preschool. With ample outdoor space, art and music, as well as dedicated teachers, Matthew is creating a rare and magical space for children and parents alike.

Annie and Matthew co-founded this little school in 2018.  

With decades of management experience across corporations and educational facilities, she knows what it takes to keep things running smoothly, while also planning for the future health and success of school.  

Day to day, Annie handles communications, admissions, accounting, and strategic planning. And, she  is always available to lend a compassionate ear to any parent needing to vent, or just have a chat!  

She and Matthew are also knee-deep in raising their introverted, sassy, book-loving,  intellectual, nine year old daughter, Evelyn.  When not busy with school matters, she keeps them busy practicing, re-evaluating, and rewriting strategies for raising strong, healthy kids!
